I have been a Consultant Orthopeadic Surgeon specialising in the shoulder and elbow for 20 years giving me a wide experience of injuries and pathologies so there is very little I haven’t seen and treated! Following an initial consultation, I usually recommend X-rays and scans allowing me to reach an accurate diagnosis. Not all shoulder and elbow problems require surgery so I work closely with specialist physiotherapists who provide bespoke treatments and radiologists who can administer ultrasound guided injections. If surgery is required, much is performed through an arthroscope (keyhole surgery) which avoids large incisions and potentially speeds up post-operative recovery. Post-operative rehabilitation is vital to the success of shoulder and elbow surgery so nurses and therapists are a vital part of my team.

The following are examples of the common operations that I perform:

  • Around the shoulder, I carry out shoulder replacement for arthritis, rotator cuff repairs, release of frozen shoulders, acromioclavicular joint excisions / reconstructions, stabilisations for dislocations and subacromial decompressions for rotator cuff bursitis and impingement
  • Around the elbow, I carry out releases for tennis / golfer’s elbow and decompressions of the ulnar nerve.
  • Although I take on fracture work at The Norfolk and Norwich University Trust Hospital, I don’t perform fracture surgery in the private sector

Between the NHS and private sector, I perform around 500 operations per year. The shoulder and elbow unit at the Norfolk and Norwich University Trust Hospital is one of the busiest in the country.

All post-operative data concerning my shoulder replacements is sent to the National joint Registry. Post-operative rehabilitation is vital to the success of shoulder surgery and therefore I work closely with the nursing staff and physiotherapists.

I keep up to date with the latest technology. I am currently introducing Blueprint software into my shoulder replacement service. Blueprint takes cross sectional CT scans and converts them into 3D images enabling more accurate pre-operative planning.

I am a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons England and Wales and a member of The British Elbow and Shoulder Society.

I was brought up and educated in Suffolk, but went to medical school and undertook my orthopaedic training in London. My final training year was spent in Australia where I completed an Australian Orthopaedic Association fellowship in upper limb surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. I have also worked at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital where I gained a Master of Surgery degree in cartilage repair with Professor George Bentley.
